Reports indicate heightened police activity across parts of Lagos following the killing of a suspected cult figure and the arrest of individuals linked to related criminal networks, as authorities intensify operations against cultism and violent crime.
According to the police, a suspected leader of the Buccaneers cult group, identified as Adedipe Adeyinkan, was shot dead in the Iponri area of Surulere on April 11 after gunfire was reported near the National Stadium Bridge. Police operatives responding to the incident found the victim with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle and rushed him to hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The incident, believed to be connected to ongoing cult rivalry, triggered increased patrols and tactical deployments in parts of the metropolis, particularly in Surulere and adjoining areas, amid concerns over possible reprisals and escalating gang tensions.
Police authorities confirmed that vehicles linked to the attack were recovered, while efforts are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects and dismantle associated networks. Additional operations in recent days have also led to multiple arrests tied to cult-related activities and armed robbery across the state, reinforcing a broader crackdown on criminal groups.
In a separate development, the Lagos State Police Command issued a public warning over a growing trend of robbery targeting job seekers through fake interview invitations.
The command disclosed that the incident was reported in the Magodo area on April 9, where unsuspecting victims were lured to a location under the guise of job recruitment and subsequently robbed. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the scheme, while others remain at large.
Authorities cautioned residents, particularly young job seekers, to verify the authenticity of employment offers and avoid attending interviews in isolated or unverified locations, noting that such scams are increasingly being used as cover for criminal activity.
The developments highlight ongoing security concerns in Lagos, where law enforcement agencies continue to battle cult violence and evolving forms of urban crime, even as they ramp up surveillance and public awareness efforts to curb emerging threats.
