Army recognizes Lagbaja, names new recreational park in Plateau after him
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major General AE Abubakar, officially unveiled the Mariya Abiodun Lagbaja Recreational Park in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday.
According to a statement on the Nigerian Army’s website on Sunday, the park is named in honour of the immediate past president of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Mariya Lagbaja, recognising her “outstanding contributions to the welfare of officers, soldiers, and their families, particularly within the 3 Division.”
Located at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, the park reportedly boasts “an impressive array of attractions designed to enhance the quality of life for members of the barracks community.”
“Facilities include a sparkling swimming pool, a state-of-the-art 5-a-side synthetic football pitch, and various recreational equipment such as trampolines, bouncy castles, electric merry-go-round trains, bicycles, swings, and battery-powered bikes. All amenities are floodlit, enabling families to enjoy the park both day and night, the statement revealed.
In his remarks during the grand opening ceremony, Major General Abubakar noted that the event also served to honour the legacy of the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, the late Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja.
“We remember General Lagbaja not only for his service but for his belief in the importance of community and welfare. This facility serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy,” the GOC was quoted as saying.

He also highlighted the importance of the recreational park in fostering community spirit, encouraging physical activity, and providing relaxation and entertainment for service members and their families.
“This park is not just a place for recreation; it is a vital component of our commitment to enhancing the well-being of our soldiers and their families. I encourage everyone to take full advantage of this wonderful facility and to create lasting memories here,” he added.
The statement also noted that the GOC expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. OO Oluyede, for his unwavering support, stating,
“Today’s event is made possible by the dedication of many individuals committed to improving the lives of our troops and their families. I thank the Chief of Army Staff for his continuous support and for equipping our division with the resources necessary to carry out our mission effectively.”
The unveiling ceremony reportedly featured a guided tour of the facility, the launch of various recreational equipment, and a novelty football match between NAOWA and NASWA teams, marking a celebratory day for the entire community.
