As NIHOTOUR begins Hospitality Compliance Audit in Lagos
National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has launched a comprehensive compliance exercise across Lagos State, targeting hotels, restaurants and other establishments within the hospitality, travel and tourism sectors.
The initiative, which began on Tuesday, is aimed at enforcing the provisions of the NIHOTOUR Establishment Act 2022 by ensuring that all personnel and operators in the industry are properly certified and registered with the Institute.
According to the director of legal services at NIHOTOUR, Mariam Inuwa, the exercise is grounded in the agency’s statutory responsibilities under Section 5(1)(h) of the Act. She stated that the law empowers NIHOTOUR to regulate the activities of professionals in the hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors across Nigeria.
Mrs. Inuwa further referenced Section 4(o) of the same Act, which mandates the certification of all practitioners to promote uniform standards, professionalism, and quality service delivery.
As part of the compliance efforts, NIHOTOUR officials visited several high-profile establishments, including Marriott Hotel Ikeja GRA, The Sojourner, Sheraton Lagos, Radisson Blu Victoria Island, Black Diamond Hotel and FourPoints By Sheraton. These visits were preceded by the issuance of multiple letters of demand and contravention notices to the affected organisations.
In a positive turn, the agency announced that five of the visited establishments—Marriott Hotel, The Sojourner, Radisson Blu, Black Diamond, and FourPoints by Sheraton—have now commenced the process of registration and certification with NIHOTOUR.
“The compliance drive reinforces NIHOTOUR’s unwavering commitment to repositioning the Nigerian hospitality, travel, and tourism sectors as key pillars of national development under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Institute said in a statement.
The agency added that it will continue to engage stakeholders constructively while maintaining strict enforcement of the law to ensure improved standards across the industry.
