Benue Celebrates 50, Leaders Honour With Messages Of Unity, Inclusiveness For Future
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon Rtd, has called on Benue people to make peace, unity and coexistence their top priorities as the state marks 50 years of existence.
While speaking at the grand finale of the Benue@50 celebration at IBB Square, Makurdi, Gowon said the Golden Jubilee should be more than a look at the past. It should be a fresh commitment to build bridges across communities, ethnic groups, and political lines.
He noted that with fairness, inclusiveness, mutual respect, and patriotism, Benue can overcome its security and political challenges and come out stronger.
“I believe that with the determination of President Bola Tinubu, Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, the challenges confronting Benue will be resolved,” Gowon said.
The former leader recalled initiating the process that created Benue State in 1975, which took effect in 1976. He described the state as Nigeria’s “Food Basket” and a symbol of agricultural strength and hard work.
Gowon thanked Governor Alia for inviting him to chair the historic event, calling it humbling and symbolic.
Former Vice President Namadi Sambo also praised Benue for its fertile land, rich culture, and resilient people. He said the @50 celebration honours a people whose sacrifices have fed the nation’s hope and food supply. Sambo commended Governor Alia’s leadership and urged citizens to recommit to peace and progress.
Representing Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, a state official pledged to strengthen ties with Benue and work together on border security for shared development.
The Tor Tiv, Professor James Ayatse, appealed for unity above politics. He urged leaders to practice inclusive governance and backed Governor Alia’s push for reconciliation and development.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, also called for national unity, saying Nigerians must support leaders to restore peace and cohesion. He expressed hope that the country’s current challenges will give way to a better future.
In her vote of thanks, the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Deborah Aber, appreciated all dignitaries and guests for honouring Benue at the milestone. She prayed for their safe return home.
The event, attended by top officials, traditional and religious leaders, marked the close of the Benue@50 celebrations.
