The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is reportedly preparing to release former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, just hours after the death of his mother.
According to reports, El-Rufai had been in detention for about a month over corruption allegations, with the ICPC previously insisting that his continued custody was backed by a valid court order.
Tension around the case eased on Friday after the passing of his mother, Umma El-Rufai, an announcement that drew public condolences from several political figures. Among them was National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who expressed sympathy to the El-Rufai family and prayed for the repose of the deceased.
Following the development, El-Rufai’s son, Bashir El-Rufai, took to social media platform X to announce that his father would be released from detention, describing the situation as unlawful and thanking supporters for standing by the family.
At the time of the report, the ICPC had not officially confirmed the release.
The story was reported by Premium Times Nigeria, which noted that reactions continued to trail the situation as the family observed mourning.
Other political figures, including Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, also extended condolences following the death of El-Rufai’s mother.
