Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has decided to deploy artificial intelligence-enabled security infrastructure across Plateau State, beginning with Jos, as part of efforts to strengthen security and prevent recurring violence.
Speaking during an engagement with the Plateau State government, Tijani said his commitment to the initiative is deeply personal, recalling that he was a student in Jos during the 2001 crisis, when his family lost properties and friends.
“I happened to be a student in Jos in 2001 when the first big situation happened, and my family lost properties and friends to this situation. So it is a privilege for me to serve under your leadership,” he said.
The minister said he had held extensive discussions with the state governor and arrived in Jos alongside members of his technical team to begin collaboration with the government.
According to him, the initiative will focus on strengthening core digital infrastructure while deploying a network of artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance cameras across the state, starting with Jos metropolis.
Tijani emphasized that the project is not an empty promise, noting that similar technology-driven security solutions are already operational in states such as Lagos and Enugu, where he said the systems have delivered positive results.
Describing the continued security challenges in Jos as heartbreaking, the minister assured residents that his ministry would commit all available resources to support lasting peace and improved safety in Plateau State.
“We will work with the government to ensure that we deepen the core digital infrastructure that we have and have a network of artificial intelligence-enabled cameras all over the state, starting with Jos,” he added.
