The Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, has pledged to give the Benin Recreation Club, a major facelift within the next 12 months.
Igbinedion made the promise in Benin on Saturday during the commissioning of a newly remodelled ultramodern lounge named after him at the BRC.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of the club, Igbinedion said the facility requires urgent improvement.
“This place needs a drastic improvement. I would like the committee to meet with me, and I promise that 12 months from now, this place will wear a new look,” he stated.
He also thanked both the current and past executives of the club for their efforts in sustaining the BRC.
“Many organisations or associations like this have gone into extinction, but you have put in your best to keep this going,” he said.
The octogenarian appreciated the club’s leadership and board of trustees for honouring him by naming the lounge after him. He assured them of his continued support, especially as a founding member of the BRC.
In his remarks, the Special Guest of Honour and Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, described the BRC as the best place to relax and engage in sports after a stressful day. He encouraged members of the public to join the club.
Earlier, in his welcome speech, the President of the BRC, Courage Osamuyi, said the lounge was named after Chief Igbinedion in recognition of his immense support for the club and his contributions to humanity.
“The presence of the Esama at the BRC signifies a new dawn. What we are witnessing today is just the beginning. With his involvement, greater things will begin to happen”, Osamuyi said.
He also thanked Igbinedion for his good work and for honouring the club with his presence.
