The leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken steps to strengthen collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force to enhance the security of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Chairman of the NCC Board, Idris Olorunnimbe, alongside the Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Aminu Maida, paid a strategic working visit on Friday to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting focused on deepening inter-agency cooperation to safeguard critical telecommunications assets amid rising incidents of vandalism, theft, and other security threats across the sector.
A key highlight of the discussions was the implementation of the Presidential Order designating telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII). Both sides emphasized the importance of the directive in protecting assets vital to national security, economic stability, and Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda
Olorunnimbe reaffirmed the NCC’s commitment to working closely with security agencies to ensure robust protection of telecom facilities nationwide. He noted that the CNII designation provides a stronger legal and operational framework to tackle offences such as fibre cuts, base station vandalism, and unauthorized access to network systems.
Maida stressed the need for improved intelligence sharing, faster response mechanisms, and coordinated enforcement between the NCC and the police. According to him, strengthened collaboration will not only secure infrastructure but also guarantee uninterrupted communication services for citizens and businesses.
In response, Disu assured that the Nigeria Police Force is ready to partner fully with the NCC, pledging intensified enforcement of existing laws and proactive measures to curb criminal activities targeting telecom infrastructure.
Beyond infrastructure protection, both parties also explored broader cooperation in using telecommunications technology to support crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and emergency response.
The visit underscores growing synergy between regulatory and law enforcement institutions as Nigeria seeks to address emerging security challenges within its rapidly evolving digital landscape.
