Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

Oluremi Tinubu disburses N950 million to vulnerable elderly people – (RHIESS)

The Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) promoted by First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is to disburse N950 million to 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.

The First Lady disclosed this Thursday at the launch of the maiden edition of RHIESS in Abuja.

She said that the economic empowerment programme was borne out of steadfast commitment to the well-being of the elderly citizens and a collective pursuit of a more inclusive and compassionate society.

She was represented at the launch of the scheme, themed: Better Days Ahead by the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Nana Shettima.

Mrs Tinubu said each of the selected beneficiaries would receive N100,000 to cushion the effect of the economic hardship during the festive period.

She said each state of the federation would receive N25 million as approved by the board of RHIESS, that has Alhaji Abdulsamad Isyaku and Mr Oluremi Makanjuola as trustees, without discrimination.

“This scheme is to support 250 vulnerable elderly citizens aged 65 and above in all 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory and veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA). These selected beneficiaries will receive a sum of N100,000 each. This is to cushion the effect of the economic situation and to alleviate the burdens of our esteemed elders during this festive period.

“As we approach the festive season, it becomes very important to emphasize the significance prioritizing our elderly citizens in our initiatives. By reaching out to the elderly this festive period, we not only honour their contributions but also acknowledge the unique encounters they face,” Mrs Tinubu said.

In her welcome address, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, stated that beyond distribution of relief, the mission of the RHIESS was to foster a sense of community, compassion and respect for elders, youths, girl child and widows.

“Today, we gather not just to distribute items but to express our deep gratitude and respect for the wealth of wisdom and experience that our elders bring to our lives. In the fast-paced world we live in, it is essential to pause and appreciate the pillars of our community—the elderly. Their stories, guidance, and enduring spirits have shaped our collective journey”, Mahmoud said.

In her remarks, the Mandate Secretary, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Mrs Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, said the scheme would also provide humanitarian services for the elderly including free medical check-ups free drugs, free eye check-ups and glasses, free high blood pressure check-up and counselling and free enlistment in the National Health Insurance scheme.
