Former Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has advocated for the prioritization of citizen welfare as the primary metric for assessing national greatness. He made this assertion during a keynote address delivered at the Rotary International District 9141 Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking on the topic, “The Magic of Connection: The Imperative and Privilege of Service,” Osinbajo emphasized that political governance should focus on the provision of essential services, including quality education, accessible healthcare, and a comprehensive social security system, which he described as fundamental citizen rights.
He cited the historical implementation of free basic education in Western Nigeria by Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a model of impactful and selfless governance, noting the policy’s implementation despite significant financial implications.
Osinbajo recounted his involvement in the drafting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto in 2014, highlighting the inclusion of a robust social investment program, which subsequently led to initiatives such as the national school feeding scheme and TraderMoni.
He reiterated his belief that a nation’s greatness is determined by its treatment of its most vulnerable citizens.
Further addressing the issue of corruption on the African continent, Osinbajo asserted that the continent’s challenges stem from the underutilization of its human resources, rather than a lack of talent.
He challenged the elite to engage in self-reflection, urging them to evaluate whether their achievements are rooted in genuine service to others.
Osinbajo also called for improved budget prioritization and the implementation of fiscal policies designed to enhance the living conditions of the nation’s most vulnerable populations.
