Seplat Energy Workers Embark On Strike Over Welfare Dispute

Workers of Seplat Energy recently commenced an industrial action following unresolved welfare concerns and a breakdown in negotiations over their 2026 collective bargaining agreement.
The strike, led by members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, began after talks with the company’s management failed to yield agreement on key issues affecting staff conditions, salaries, and benefits. Union leaders described the action as indefinite, reflecting growing frustration among workers over what they termed unmet obligations by the company.
As part of the strike, workers withdrew key services across Seplat’s nationwide operations, including activities at both onshore and offshore facilities. Critical functions such as production reporting and export processes were disrupted, although essential safety operations were maintained to prevent risks.
The development raised concerns within Nigeria’s energy sector, as Seplat is one of the country’s leading indigenous oil producers, contributing significantly to national output. Industry analysts warned that a prolonged shutdown could negatively affect crude oil production levels and government revenue, especially as the country seeks to stabilize and increase output.
However, the situation later saw intervention from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, which facilitated renewed dialogue between both parties. Following fresh commitments by Seplat’s management to address welfare demands, the union agreed to suspend the strike and instructed workers to return to their duties.
The resolution is considered temporary, with both sides expected to conclude negotiations on the collective bargaining agreement in the coming days. Observers note that failure to reach a lasting agreement could reignite tensions within the sector.
