Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

Standard Chartered offers loans to entrepreneurs on single-digit

Standard Chartered Bank (Nigeria) Limited, in partnership with Youth Business International and FATE Foundation, has graduated the second cohort of the Revolving Fund Programme and offered them loans at single digits.

According to a statement on Tuesday, the initiative is part of the Futuremakers global youth economic empowerment programme, funded by the Standard Chartered Foundation.

The RFP aims to support nano and microenterprises and is designed to tackle the financial obstacles encountered by small-scale businesses through the provision of low-interest loans.

Also included in the programme is comprehensive financial literacy and management training to empower existing and emerging entrepreneurs not only with the capital required for business growth but also with skills to effectively manage and sustain their ventures.

Speaking on the initiative, Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing, Nigeria, Joke Adu, said, “We are extremely proud of the partnership and success of the second cohort. 26 young entrepreneurs participated in our pilot programme, and feedback on their business performance post the semester has been profound. This is an outstanding example of how Futuremakers is empowering young entrepreneurs and benefiting our communities, and we are extremely optimistic about the impact the programme will continue to have on incoming beneficiaries.’

Highlights of the programme cover financial capacity training, business development & advisory support, digital tools and financial empowerment, and debt loan financing (low-interest loans ranging from N500,000 to N10,000,000 at 2 per cent – 5 per cent interest rate).

In her comments, the Executive Director of the Fate Foundation, Nike Adeyemi, said, “We are excited to continue our collaboration with Standard Chartered Foundation and Youth Business International on the Revolving Fund Programme. This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to support entrepreneurial development, providing the necessary resources for nano and microenterprises to flourish by bridging the financing gap and catalysing sustainable growth.

The programme is set to empower 300 young, underserved entrepreneurs (18-35 years), particularly women, to achieve financial independence and boost local economies. Through microloans, tailored financial literacy training, and business coaching, the program will equip them to unlock capital, increase income, and create new jobs. The focus is on mentorship and market linkages, which will foster sustainable businesses and unleash the entrepreneurial potential of marginalised communities. The Revolving Fund Programme is a three-year programme that will run till August 2027.
