The internal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has escalated, following renewed disagreements over the party’s planned national convention scheduled for April 14.
A faction reportedly aligned with former Senate President David Mark is insisting that the convention must go ahead as planned, despite mounting legal challenges and protests surrounding the process. The group maintains that the exercise is necessary to restore order and reposition the party ahead of future elections.
However, opposing stakeholders within the party have raised concerns over the legitimacy of the convention, arguing that proper procedures were not fully observed. This has led to increased tension, with some members seeking judicial intervention to halt or restructure the planned gathering.
The controversy has also spilled into the public space, with reports of protests at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where aggrieved members are calling for regulatory scrutiny of the process and clarification on the party’s leadership status.
Political analysts say the unfolding situation reflects deeper structural and leadership struggles within smaller opposition parties, many of which continue to face internal fragmentation as they attempt to consolidate ahead of the next election cycle.
As the April 14 date approaches, attention is now focused on whether the convention will proceed, be legally restrained, or result in a negotiated settlement among the warring factions.
