Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) commenced its 8th National Convention in Abuja on Friday, drawing thousands of party faithful, stakeholders and delegates from across the country to elect a new set of national officers.
Party officials confirmed that no fewer than 8,453 accredited delegates have converged on the Federal Capital Territory for the exercise, in what is being described as one of the largest political gatherings in recent years. The influx has significantly increased activity around key parts of the city, with heightened security presence observed at major entry points and within the convention venue.
In response to the surge in population and anticipated logistical pressure, the Federal Government directed civil servants within Abuja to work from home for the day. Officials said the move was aimed at easing traffic congestion and ensuring smooth coordination of security arrangements. A senior government source noted that the directive was intended “to reduce pressure on infrastructure and allow security agencies carry out their duties without disruption.”
Meanwhile, party leaders reiterated that the distribution of key positions ahead of the convention followed established zoning principles designed to reflect Nigeria’s federal character. Former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, confirmed the arrangement, stating that consultations had been extensive and aimed at preserving unity within the party. “The offices have been zoned in line with federal character to ensure fairness, inclusivity and balance across all regions,” he said.
The convention is expected to produce a new National Working Committee, with several high-profile contenders vying for strategic positions. Observers say the outcome will shape the party’s internal dynamics ahead of future electoral cycles and test its ability to maintain cohesion amid competing interests.
Security agencies have assured residents of safety, while urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities as proceedings continue. The convention is expected to run through the day with announcements of results anticipated after voting and collation are concluded.
