Reshuffles Leadership as Tinubu Defends Electoral Act 2026 at Abuja Convention
The All Progressives Congress has ushered in a new phase of leadership following the conclusion of its 4th Elective National Convention held in Abuja, where Nentawe Yilwatda was officially adopted and sworn in as the party’s National Chairman. The emergence of Yilwatda signals a strategic recalibration within the ruling party as it prepares for future political contests and internal consolidation.
The convention, attended by top party stakeholders, governors, lawmakers, and delegates from across the country, also saw the return of 21 members of the National Working Committee (NWC), indicating a measure of continuity within the party’s administrative structure. However, the exclusion of key figures such as Emma Eneukwu, Nze Duru, and Bashir Gumel from the new leadership team points to a deliberate reshuffle aimed at repositioning the party’s internal dynamics and possibly rewarding loyalty while making room for new influences.
In his address to party faithful, Bola Ahmed Tinubu used the platform to strongly defend the controversial Electoral Act 2026, which has drawn criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups. He maintained that the legislation is a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process, insisting that its provisions are designed to enhance transparency, credibility, and efficiency in elections rather than undermine them.
Tinubu dismissed allegations that the APC is attempting to steer the country toward a one-party state, describing such claims as unfounded and politically motivated. He reassured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to pluralism and democratic values, emphasizing that a robust opposition is essential for national development. According to him, the reforms embedded in the Electoral Act are necessary to address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s electoral system, including irregularities, logistical inefficiencies, and disputes arising from election outcomes.
The president further called on party members to remain united and focused, urging them to see the new leadership structure as an opportunity to strengthen grassroots mobilization and governance delivery. He stressed that the APC must continue to evolve in response to the expectations of Nigerians, particularly in areas of economic growth, security, and institutional reforms.
Political observers note that the combination of leadership changes within the APC and the administration’s firm stance on electoral reforms could shape the country’s political landscape in the coming years. While supporters view the developments as a sign of maturity and forward-thinking governance, critics remain cautious, arguing that the true impact of the Electoral Act 2026 will only become evident in subsequent elections.
