Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi on Friday jointly addressed a press conference to express concerns over issues relating to Nigeria’s Electoral Act and the country’s democratic process.
The political leaders, alongside other stakeholders under a coalition platform, said the engagement was aimed at drawing national attention to what they described as urgent electoral reforms required to strengthen transparency, credibility, and public confidence in elections.
Speaking during the briefing, the leaders stressed the need for strict adherence to electoral laws and institutional independence, noting that credible elections remain fundamental to democratic stability in Nigeria.
They called on relevant authorities to ensure that provisions of the Electoral Act are fully implemented, insisting that democratic governance can only thrive where electoral processes reflect the genuine will of the people.
According to the coalition, recent political developments have heightened concerns about compliance with electoral regulations, prompting the joint intervention by opposition figures and political stakeholders.
The leaders maintained that electoral reforms must be pursued through lawful and constitutional means, urging citizens, civil society organisations, and democratic institutions to remain vigilant in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
They further emphasised the importance of dialogue and collective action among political actors to address perceived gaps within the existing electoral framework.
The joint press conference forms part of ongoing political engagements by opposition leaders seeking institutional reforms ahead of future electoral activities in the country.
