In a significant step towards advancing the interests of the southwest, a bill sponsored by Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former governor and current senator representing Ogun East in the national assembly, has successfully passed its first reading at the Senate.
The Southwest Development Commission bill aims to establish a commission entrusted with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds from the federal government, among other crucial functions. Notably, the commission will focus on addressing infrastructural and ecological challenges prevalent in the Southwest region.
The proposed establishment of this commission is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring a steady flow of funds for the comprehensive development of the entire South-west region.

Senator Daniel expressed his enthusiasm about the bill’s progress, stating, “The process of rethinking Nigeria starts today as I had the privilege to read the South West Development Commission Bill that I sponsored before the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I thank all the Senators from the South West region who are co-sponsors of this long overdue initiative in the best interest of South West and our dear country, Nigeria.”
It is worth noting that Nigeria already has development commissions in place for the Niger Delta and the North-East. The Southwest zone comprises the states of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. With the bill’s advancement, hopes are high that the Southwest Development Commission will usher in significant progress and development for the region.
