President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country will overcome the challenges of terrorism and banditry, describing the crimes as unacceptable and alien to the nation’s values. He spoke in Abuja on Monday while addressing participants at the National Economic Council conference on inclusive growth and sustainable national development, where he acknowledged that insecurity remains a major concern but stressed that his administration is determined to defeat it.
“We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us,” Tinubu said, adding that the security situation has kept leaders “sleepless at night” but that Nigerians would prevail through determination and resilience.
The president linked insecurity to Nigeria’s economic difficulties, noting that violence and criminality have disrupted livelihoods, discouraged investment and slowed development across several regions. He said restoring peace and strengthening the nation’s security architecture are critical to the success of the Renewed Hope National Development Plan for 2026–2030.
According to him, his administration will continue to reinforce the capacity of security agencies and improve collaboration among federal, state and local authorities to confront armed groups. Tinubu also commended some state governments for their efforts in supporting security operations and maintaining relative stability in their areas.
Tinubu further highlighted ongoing fiscal and monetary reforms, saying early indicators such as improved exchange-rate stability and moderating inflation suggest that the economy is beginning to respond. He emphasised that sustained cooperation between the federal government and the states is essential for addressing insecurity and accelerating inclusive economic growth, urging stakeholders to remain committed to collective solutions.
The assurance comes amid renewed public concern over recent violent attacks in parts of the country, underscoring the urgency of the government’s pledge to restore security and safeguard lives and property nationwide.
