A recent Global Terrorism Index report has identified two attacks in Nigeria’s Borno State in 2025 as among the deadliest worldwide. The assaults, which occurred in Darajamal and Kukawa, resulted in significant loss of life and underscore the persistent security challenges facing the region.
The report details that these incidents rank alongside some of the most lethal attacks globally, highlighting the severity of the violence perpetrated by insurgent groups in northeastern Nigeria. Analysts note that the scale of these attacks has broader implications for regional stability and counterterrorism efforts.
A security expert commented, “The inclusion of Darajamal and Kukawa in this global ranking demonstrates the magnitude of the threat posed by insurgents. It is a stark reminder that the international community must continue to support Nigeria’s counterterrorism operations.”
Authorities in Borno State have continued operations against militant groups while emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led interventions and community cooperation to prevent future attacks. “Every effort is being made to secure the region and protect lives,” a spokesperson for the state government said.
The Global Terrorism Index, compiled annually, assesses the impact of terrorist activities worldwide, considering fatalities, injuries, and property damage, and aims to provide policymakers with data to shape effective security strategies.
