DR Congo Criticizes Nigeria’s Eligibility Petition as ‘Backdoor’ World Cup Bid

The Democratic Republic of Congo has blasted the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following a petition lodged with FIFA regarding the eligibility of players fielded during their recent African play-off for the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were defeated and eliminated by DR Congo on penalties in the crucial two-legged play-off, which determined Africa’s intercontinental qualifying team. The NFF confirmed on Tuesday that they have formally petitioned world football’s governing body, alleging that DR Congo fielded several ineligible players during the decisive encounter.

DR Congo has vehemently rejected these accusations, responding with an annoying statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“If you can’t win on the pitch, don’t try to win from the back door. The World Cup has to be played with dignity and confidence. Not with lawyers’ tricks. Bring it on!”

This strongly worded response indicates DR Congo’s belief that Nigeria’s petition is an attempt to overturn the on-field result through legal means rather than fair play. The dispute now escalates to FIFA, who will review the NFF’s claims and DR Congo’s defence, potentially casting a shadow over the qualification process.
