Eric Chelle declares Nigerian citizenship

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has announced that he now considers himself a Nigerian, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The French-born Malian tactician, who was appointed as Nigeria’s national team coach in 2024, has enjoyed a remarkable start to his tenure remaining unbeaten in competitive matches.

He is now preparing to lead the Super Eagles to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. In an interview with CAF, Chelle reflected on his identity and connection to Nigeria, saying that his coaching journey has transcended football.

“As I often say, it’s my DNA. Looking back on my career, this goes beyond football. Coming to coach in Africa, taking that step, it’s more than sport,” he explained.

Chelle emphasized that his work carries a deeper message of unity and mutual respect.

“I use football to carry a message: that everyone can live together. It’s not about origin or religion; it’s about respect for the individual. Yes, it made waves that a Malian is in charge of Nigeria, but I’m simply trying to do my job with humility and respect.”

The Super Eagles boss concluded by expressing his growing bond with Nigeria and his commitment to the team’s success.

“I arrived as someone who is 50% Malian, 50% French. But today, I am in Nigeria; I consider myself Nigerian and I’m ready to give everything for this team and country. I’m focused on respecting each person and moving forward carefully with clear personal goals.”

Under Chelle’s guidance, optimism is high among Nigerian fans as the Super Eagles aim to reclaim continental glory in Morocco.
