Lagos City Marathon Holds February, Celebrates 11 Years Of Global Recognition
By Elegbede Abiodun
Saturday, 14th February 2026 promises to be another memorable edition.
With just 16 days to go, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon stands as a testament to 11 years of consistent growth and continental pride, firmly established as one of Africa’s most anticipated sporting events.
Over the past decade, the marathon has evolved beyond a mere road race. It has been instrumental in discovering new athletic talent, elevating Africa’s profile in the global marathon community, and significantly boosting Lagos’s economy. The event stimulates local businesses, from transport and hospitality to smaller enterprises, generating hundreds of direct and thousands of indirect employment opportunities annually.
Much of this success is attributed to Nilayo Sports Management Ltd., the race’s concept holders and organisers, led by Mrs Yetunde Olopade. Her vision and strategic direction have been key to elevating the marathon to a World Athletics Gold Label race, setting new benchmarks for road racing across the continent.
On Saturday, 14th February 2026, athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and sports fans will once again converge on the streets of Lagos, participating for career aspirations, enjoyment, fitness, and national pride in what promises to be another memorable edition.
The 11th edition will also feature a historic new race route. For the first time, the 42km marathon will commence at ORCA Mall on Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, traverse sections of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, and conclude at the iconic Eko Atlantic City.
