The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is set for a dramatic finish as Rangers International and Rivers United head into the final matchday separated by just one point in the title race.
After 37 matches, Rangers sit top of the table with 65 points, while Rivers United are close behind on 64 points, setting up a winner-takes-all final round of fixtures.
Rangers will travel to Lagos to face Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. A win for the Enugu-based side will guarantee them the league title, which would be their ninth NPFL crown and further cement their status as one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs.
However, the task is expected to be difficult, as Ikorodu City have been unbeaten at home throughout the season and are also chasing a strong finish that could secure continental qualification. Rangers will rely heavily on their strong defensive record and the attacking form of striker Godwin Obaje, who has been among the league’s top scorers.
On the other hand, Rivers United will host Katsina United in Port Harcourt. Their path to the title is straightforward but challenging—they must win their match and hope Rangers drop points in Lagos.
Rivers United, coached by Finidi George, have enjoyed a strong campaign built on discipline and consistency, particularly at home where they have remained difficult to beat. Their comeback victory in the previous matchday has kept their title hopes alive heading into the final game.
The NPFL has scheduled all final-day matches to kick off simultaneously to ensure fairness in the title race. This means fans across the country will follow both games closely as the championship could swing either way depending on results.
Beyond the title fight, the final day will also decide continental qualification spots and relegation battles involving several other clubs across the league table.
By the end of the final whistle, either Rangers will secure another historic league triumph, or Rivers United will complete a late-season turnaround to claim the championship in dramatic fashion.
