Play Network has announced a partnership with MediaKing to deploy free public Wi-Fi services across major cities in Nigeria, beginning with pilot programmes in Lagos and Abuja.
The initiative, according to both companies, is aimed at expanding digital access, improving internet connectivity in high-traffic public areas, and supporting small businesses, students, and commuters who rely on affordable internet services for daily activities.
Under the pilot phase, selected locations in Lagos and Abuja will be equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots to assess user demand, network performance, and security compliance before a broader national rollout is considered. The companies stated that feedback from the initial deployment will guide expansion into other urban centres.
Play Network said the project aligns with its broader goal of enhancing digital infrastructure and supporting technology-driven services across entertainment, education, and commerce sectors in Nigeria. The company also noted that the collaboration is designed to bridge connectivity gaps in densely populated urban areas.
MediaKing is expected to provide the technical backbone for the deployment, including network infrastructure, security protocols, and system maintenance support. The firm described the partnership as part of its expansion strategy into African digital infrastructure markets.
Authorities and stakeholders in the telecom and digital economy space are expected to monitor the rollout closely, particularly in relation to data protection, service reliability, and integration with existing broadband infrastructure.
If successful, the pilot programme could pave the way for a wider public Wi-Fi network across additional Nigerian cities, contributing to increased internet penetration and improved digital inclusion nationwide.
