Google will acquire cloud security platform Wiz for $32 billion, citing the need for greater cybersecurity capacity as artificial intelligence embeds itself in technology infrastructure. The all-cash deal brings Wiz into the Google Cloud operation, boosting the capacity of consumers to use "multiple clouds" and providing "an end-to-end security platform for customers, of all types and sizes, in the AI era," the companies said in a joint press release on March 18, 2025. Google, for online visibility, launches AI Max

Google on Wednesday announced the global beta rollout of AI Max for search campaigns, a new upgrade to its Search Ads platform that provides smarter, more intuitive advertising tools for businesses, including those in Africa seeking to expand their online presence.

AI Max uses advanced artificial intelligence to enhance how ads appear in search results, helping local businesses connect with a broader audience in today’s fast-evolving online landscape.

As the digital economy grows across Africa, more consumers are using search to make purchasing decisions, whether they are looking for local services or comparing prices.

For businesses in diverse regions with varying needs, reaching the right customers can be challenging. AI Max aims to solve that problem.

“Consumers are asking more specific questions and expect more relevant answers,” Senior Director of Search at Google, Brian Burdick, said in a statement.

“With AI Max, we use advanced AI to better understand these queries and connect businesses with potential customers at the right moment, with more helpful and relevant content.”

The feature, powered by Google’s Gemini technology, goes beyond traditional keyword targeting, allowing businesses to appear in searches that may not exactly match their ads’ wording.

For example, a small shop in Kumasi selling handmade bags can now show up in searches like “durable carryall for weekend travel,” even without the exact keyword.

The search engine giant explained that AI Max offers several features designed to enhance the efficiency of advertising. One such feature is search term matching, which automatically identifies new, relevant queries that a business might not have thought of.

Dynamic text customisation allows ad copy to update in real-time, better aligning with user intent. Additionally, AI Max offers final URL expansion, which directs users to the most relevant page on a business’s website, and control settings that provide advertisers with more say in how their ads appear, including options like location targeting and brand filters.

Google said that for African business owners, many of whom operate in competitive markets with limited budgets, these tools could be crucial in standing out. The platform’s automation helps ensure ad spend is more effective, connecting businesses to high-intent customers.

Early adopters of AI Max have seen a 14 per cent increase in conversions with similar costs, with even higher gains for those using traditional targeting methods, the big tech revealed.

Importantly, AI Max is an enhancement to existing search campaigns, meaning African businesses can easily start using it without creating new campaigns from scratch.

“Many African entrepreneurs juggle multiple responsibilities. AI Max makes advertising work harder for them without adding to their workload,” Burdick said.

This launch is part of Google’s broader efforts to support small and medium-sized businesses in Africa, including through digital training programs like the Hustle Academy. With AI Max, these businesses now have a powerful tool to grow faster and more efficiently in a digital-first world.

The open beta for AI Max will begin later this month, with global availability, including in Africa.
