FG, Ekiti laud ABUAD for rankings; third in Africa, first in Nigeria, 84th on globe

    * ABUAD takes its place among the 100th top universities in the world.

The Federal Government and its Ekiti State counterpart have congratulated Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, over its 84th position on the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2025.

ABUAD was ranked third in Africa and first in Nigeria.

The THE Impact Rankings, which assesses 2,526 universities from 130 countries or territories based on their progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, was released on June 18.

ABUAD was particularly ranked for ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, ending poverty in all its forms, taking urgent action to combat climate change, strengthening the means of implementation of SDG goals and revitalising the global partnership for sustainable development.

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, described ABUAD’s feat as “a catalyst that should propel, inspire and encourage deeper commitment to quality, functional, and globally competitive education.”

Ekiti State Governor, Oyebanji, in a personally signed letter to ABUAD Founder, Aare Afe Babalola, dated June 26, stated that “the university (ABUAD) is keeping to its vision of being the foremost centre of learning of global reckoning in the African continent.”

This was contained in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Monday by the ABUAD Director of Corporate Affairs, Tunde Olofintila.

The governor said, “There is no doubt that ABUAD has been an oasis in the desert and a positive influence in the higher education landscape in Nigeria and Africa since its inception”.

In the letter, Oyebanji told Afe Babalola, “I am so excited to receive the news of the new feat of achievements that your soar-away-university, ABUAD, has attained in the latest university ranking.

“I want to, therefore, congratulate you, the university management and staff on this remarkable achievement. It is my prayer that you continue to blaze the trail in all ramifications,” Oyebanji stated.

Alausa, in a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo, congratulated Babalola and the entire academic and non-academic staff of ABUAD on the world-acclaimed feat and recognition.

The minister, who expressed unreserved delight that the 15-year-old ABUAD was ranked among the 100th top universities in the world by the highly respected THE Impact Rankings, also commended the institution’s founder for his “unwavering dedication to educational excellence and national development over the years.”

He said, “Your achievement is not only a personal triumph, but a national milestone. It is inspiring to witness your decade-long dream, once expressed to former Chief Justice Tanko Mohammed, become a global reality within your lifetime.

“This global recognition could not have been possible without the dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence by the entire staff of ABUAD. You have demonstrated that with the right vision, passion and professionalism, Nigerian institutions can lead on the world stage,” Alausa noted.

While reiterating its commitment to supporting forward-thinking institutions like ABUAD, the ministry affirmed its readiness to collaborate further in promoting educational innovation, research, and sustainable development across Nigeria.
