Eko Cares Initiative empowers 1,000 Lagosians with ₦460 million

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, flanked by Lagos State Executive Members, Officials and Beneficiaries at the Official Presentation of Cheques to beneficiaries of the Financial Assistance Programme (EKO CARES), organized by the Office of Political, Legislative & Civic Engagement (OPL&CE), held today at the Blue Roof, LTV 8 Premises, Agidingbi Road, Ikeja, Lagos.

… showing compassion to the masses in dire need.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has disbursed ₦460 million in financial assistance to 1,000 vulnerable residents under the state’s Eko Cares Initiative.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and social welfare.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Governor presented the cheques at the Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, during the official launch organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE).

Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as a reaffirmation of the essence of governance, providing comfort, hope, and opportunities to those most in need.

He said the disbursement symbolised compassion and social responsibility, adding that progress is best measured by the government’s empathy and inclusiveness, not just infrastructure or statistics.

“This presentation is more than a ceremony, it is a celebration of compassion and shared humanity,” he said.

“Through programmes like this, we strengthen the bond between government and citizens — one built on trust, empathy, and inclusion.”

The Governor reiterated that the exercise was not a one-off, assuring that additional beneficiaries would receive their cheques before the end of the year.

“Our government will continue to stand with those who need support the most,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the Eko Cares Programme has continued to make a meaningful impact across the state by helping residents overcome economic challenges, restoring hope, and promoting stability.

“This initiative represents responsive and compassionate leadership, the kind that listens, acts, and prioritises people,” he said.

According to him, the state had already disbursed ₦1.1 billion to 2,477 residents in 2024, while another ₦1.6 billion has been earmarked to assist 2,850 more beneficiaries this year.

“These programmes will continue to expand, ensuring no Lagosian is left behind,” he assured.

Sanwo-Olu urged beneficiaries to make productive use of the support.

“See this not just as financial aid but as a seed of hope. Use it to grow your business, stabilise your home, or build your next breakthrough. Government can open doors, but it’s your determination that keeps them open,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, described Eko Cares as a reflection of the government’s deeper commitment to compassion, equity, and empowerment.

He said since its inception in 2020, the Eko Listens Financial Assistance Programme has become a beacon of hope for thousands of vulnerable residents, reinforcing the administration’s pledge that no Lagosian will be left behind in the state’s development journey.

Tajudeen highlighted other citizen-focused projects by his office, including the Civic Education and Sensitisation Programme in schools and the CitizensGate Mobile App, describing them as evidence of a government that listens with intent, responds with compassion, and acts with purpose.
