The Christian Association of Nigeria has raised the alarm over the closure of more than 100 churches in Taraba State following a wave of violent attacks that left at least 25 people dead within three days. The association said the sustained assaults have forced congregations to abandon worship centres across affected communities amid growing fear and displacement.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, CAN described the situation as “a grave threat to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence,” noting that many church buildings were either destroyed or rendered inaccessible due to insecurity. The group said worshippers have fled their homes, adding that “entire communities are now living in fear, unable to gather for prayer or normal daily activities.”
CAN condemned the killings and urged security agencies to act swiftly, stating that “the continuous loss of innocent lives is unacceptable and must not be treated with silence or indifference.” The association called on the federal and state governments to deploy adequate security personnel to vulnerable areas and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
The association further appealed for humanitarian support for affected families, warning that the crisis could worsen if urgent measures are not taken. “We cannot continue to mourn while the violence persists unchecked,” CAN said, stressing the need for decisive intervention to restore peace and enable displaced residents and churches to return safely to their communities.
