The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has issued an Air Operator Certificate to Binani Air, an airline founded by Aishatu Binani Dahiru, in what stakeholders have described as a significant breakthrough for gender inclusion in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The certification, which authorizes the airline to commence commercial flight operations, follows the successful completion of the NCAA’s rigorous five-phase approval process, including technical evaluations, safety compliance checks, and operational readiness assessments.
Confirming the development, NCAA officials stated that Binani Air met all regulatory requirements necessary for the issuance of the Air Operator Certificate, emphasizing that safety and operational standards were not compromised at any stage. “The Authority remains committed to ensuring that all certified operators adhere strictly to global aviation standards,” an official said.
Founder of the airline, Aishatu Binani Dahiru, a former senator, described the milestone as both a personal achievement and a broader statement on the evolving role of women in traditionally male-dominated sectors. “This certification is not just about launching an airline; it is about breaking barriers and demonstrating that women can lead and succeed at the highest levels of the aviation industry,” she said.
She added that the airline aims to deliver safe, reliable, and customer-focused services while contributing to job creation and economic growth within the country. “We are committed to building an airline that reflects excellence, professionalism, and innovation,” Dahiru stated.
Industry observers note that while women have made strides in aviation globally, their representation at the executive and ownership levels in Nigeria remains limited, making the emergence of a female-founded airline particularly noteworthy.
The NCAA reiterated that the entry of new operators into the aviation space would continue to be guided strictly by safety and regulatory compliance, noting that increased competition could enhance service delivery and expand travel options for passengers.
Aviation analysts have also pointed out that the development could inspire more female participation in the sector, from piloting and engineering to airline management and investment.
With the issuance of the AOC, Binani Air is expected to begin scheduled operations in the coming months, joining a competitive domestic aviation market while carrying the distinction of being a trailblazer for women-led enterprises in the industry.
