U.S. Deploys Drones, Troops to Support Nigeria in Intensified Counterterrorism Effort

The United States military has deployed multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones and approximately 200 personnel to Nigeria to support ongoing operations against Islamist militants in the country’s northern regions.
According to reports, the deployment is focused on intelligence gathering and capacity building, with U.S. personnel providing training and technical support to Nigerian forces. Officials emphasized that the troops are not embedded in frontline combat operations, while the drones are being used strictly for surveillance rather than airstrikes.
A U.S. defence official stated that the deployment was carried out at the request of Nigerian authorities, describing the situation as a shared security concern. “We see this as a shared security threat,” the official said, underscoring the collaborative nature of the mission.
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters confirmed that the U.S. operations are being coordinated from an airfield in the northeast. Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, said the initiative builds on existing intelligence cooperation frameworks, including a joint intelligence fusion arrangement designed to provide actionable data to field commanders.
Both U.S. and Nigerian authorities reiterated that the foreign troops are operating in a strictly non-combat capacity, with Nigerian forces retaining full control over operational decisions and battlefield engagements. The deployment is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to detect, track, and respond to evolving threats posed by insurgent groups.
The latest move follows renewed U.S. involvement in regional counterterrorism efforts, including targeted airstrikes against militant positions in northwest Nigeria in late 2025. It also comes amid shifting security dynamics in the Sahel, where Western military presence has declined following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from neighboring Niger after political tensions with the ruling junta.
Nigeria has been battling a protracted insurgency for over a decade, with groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP continuing to launch attacks in the northeast and expanding activities into the northwest. Security analysts warn that the convergence of insurgency and banditry in border regions could create new operational theatres for extremist groups.
Military experts note that the MQ-9 Reaper drones deployed can remain airborne for extended periods, enabling persistent surveillance over vast and difficult terrain. Although the platform is capable of conducting precision strikes, officials clarified that its current use in Nigeria is limited to intelligence collection.
The United States has maintained a long-standing defence partnership with Nigeria, providing training, equipment, and intelligence support over the years. Recent months have seen renewed engagement, including the delivery of military supplies and expanded cooperation in response to rising security challenges.
Authorities say the enhanced collaboration is expected to improve situational awareness and operational effectiveness, even as Nigeria continues to lead all combat operations within its territory.
