The Lagos State Government has concluded preparations for the 2026 edition of the Lagos Fanti Carnival, a major cultural event scheduled to take place on Easter Monday, April 6, at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square.
Officials say this year’s carnival will combine vibrant Afro-Brazilian cultural expressions with a forward-looking “Creative Economy Summit,” reflecting Lagos’ growing ambition to position itself as a hub for culture, tourism, and creative enterprise in Africa. The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, including tourists, cultural enthusiasts, investors, and industry stakeholders.
The Lagos Fanti Carnival, rooted in the history of Afro-Brazilian returnees who settled in Lagos in the 19th century, is known for its colorful parades, elaborate costumes, samba-inspired music, and street performances. Participants typically showcase a fusion of Brazilian and Yoruba heritage, making it one of the most unique cultural festivals in Nigeria.
According to organizers, the inclusion of the Creative Economy Summit marks a significant expansion of the carnival’s scope. The summit will bring together policymakers, artists, entrepreneurs, and investors to discuss opportunities in sectors such as film, music, fashion, digital content, and tourism. The goal is to leverage Lagos’ cultural assets to drive economic growth and job creation.
State authorities emphasized that security, traffic management, and public safety arrangements have been fully put in place to ensure a smooth and successful event. There will also be designated zones for performances, exhibitions, and business networking activities.
Tourism operators and local businesses are expected to benefit from increased visitor traffic during the period, with hotels, restaurants, and transport services already preparing for the influx. Analysts note that events like the Fanti Carnival play a key role in boosting the state’s internally generated revenue while promoting cultural diplomacy.
As anticipation builds, the Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to preserving cultural heritage while integrating innovation and economic opportunities, positioning the 2026 Fanti Carnival as both a celebration of identity and a platform for future growth.
