Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

Key stakeholders in Nigeria’s tourism, culture and hospitality sectors have signed a new partnership agreement aimed at repositioning the country as a major global tourism destination through the promotion of cultural heritage, historical landmarks and local attractions.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s tourism economy, attract foreign visitors and boost international recognition of the country’s rich cultural diversity and creative industries.
Officials involved in the agreement said the partnership will focus on improving the visibility, preservation and commercial value of Nigeria’s heritage sites, festivals, monuments, museums and traditional communities. The plan also seeks to create a more coordinated national tourism identity capable of competing with leading tourism destinations across Africa and beyond.
Stakeholders noted that Nigeria possesses enormous untapped tourism potential, ranging from natural landscapes and historical locations to music, fashion, cuisine and entertainment. However, they acknowledged that poor infrastructure, weak promotion, insecurity concerns and inconsistent policy implementation have limited the sector’s full growth.
Under the new framework, participating organisations are expected to collaborate on tourism branding, digital promotion, investment attraction, hospitality development and cultural exchange programmes. There are also plans to simplify tourism information for international visitors and improve access to major cultural sites.
Industry leaders said the agreement will encourage stronger collaboration between federal and state governments, private investors, travel operators, airlines, cultural institutions and local communities.
Experts believe the renewed push could significantly increase tourism revenue, create jobs and support small businesses linked to the hospitality and creative sectors. They added that promoting local heritage internationally could also strengthen cultural preservation and national identity.
The stakeholders further stressed the importance of modernising tourism infrastructure, improving transportation networks and enhancing security around tourist destinations to make Nigeria more attractive to foreign travelers.
Analysts say the initiative reflects growing recognition of tourism as a key driver of economic diversification beyond oil, with cultural tourism increasingly viewed as one of Nigeria’s strongest opportunities for long-term global engagement and revenue generation.
