Winners of the Edo Carnival band competition have received their prizes, weeks after complaints over delayed payments.
At a ceremony held on Saturday in Benin City, participants turned up to collect their rewards, bringing an end to the uncertainty that followed the carnival.
The event had earlier drawn attention for its colourful displays and performances, but soon after, some participants took to social media to complain about delays in prize disbursement. The reactions sparked debate and raised questions around the organisation of the carnival.
Speaking at the presentation, co-convener Daniel Eromosele addressed the concerns and clarified the role of the Edo State Government.
He said the government was not the organiser of the carnival but only supported it alongside corporate partners and other stakeholders. According to him, claims that the government failed to pay winners were “false, misleading and unfair.”
Eromosele urged the public to be cautious in sharing information, stressing the difference between supporting and organising such events. He added that beyond the prize money, the carnival was designed to promote Edo culture, bring people together and create opportunities for participants.
He also commended the organising team, sponsors and contestants, describing the maiden edition as a strong outing that showcased creativity and cultural pride.
For many of the winners, the ceremony was a relief after weeks of waiting. Some said receiving their prizes finally brought closure to the issue.
Organisers also used the occasion to announce plans for the next edition, with promises of a bigger and better outing in 2026, including improved structure and wider participation.
With the prizes now paid, attention is expected to return to the performances and talent that defined the carnival.
