Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has appointed Matthew Kukah as the Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), in a move aimed at strengthening institutional leadership and advancing academic excellence in the state’s higher education system.
The appointment places Bishop Kukah, a respected cleric and public intellectual, in a largely ceremonial but influential role as the titular head of the university. As Chancellor, he will preside over convocations, confer degrees, and serve as a symbol of the institution’s values and vision. His selection is widely interpreted as a strategic effort by the Soludo administration to align COOU with strong ethical leadership, national relevance, and global academic standards.
Kukah is known for his long-standing contributions to education, governance, and national dialogue. His experience in policy advocacy and intellectual engagement is expected to enhance the university’s profile and foster stronger collaborations within and outside Nigeria’s academic community.
The Anambra State government has emphasized that the decision reflects its broader commitment to repositioning the education sector as a driver of development. Under Soludo’s leadership, reforms have focused on improving infrastructure, promoting research and innovation, and attracting credible figures to guide public institutions.
Stakeholders in the education sector have largely welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that Kukah’s influence will inspire both staff and students while reinforcing discipline, integrity, and academic rigor within the university.
