The Federal Government of Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa following reports of renewed anti-foreigner protests and attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses.
Officials say the move is a formal diplomatic response to incidents allegedly involving looting, harassment, and violence against foreign-owned shops, many of them run by Nigerians. The Nigerian government expressed strong concern over the safety of its citizens and the destruction of livelihoods.
According to sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the envoy was asked to provide a detailed explanation of the situation and outline steps being taken by South African authorities to restore order and protect affected communities.
The government also called for swift investigations and accountability for those responsible, stressing that such incidents threaten bilateral relations and undermine longstanding ties between both countries.
Nigerian authorities have urged citizens in South Africa to remain cautious while monitoring developments closely. They reiterated that the protection of Nigerians abroad remains a top priority and warned that further diplomatic measures could be considered if the situation does not improve.
