Peggy E. Moore has finally achieved a lifelong dream at age 75, earning her bachelor’s degree from Temple University after working at the institution for more than four decades.
Moore officially graduated on May 6 with a degree in general studies, becoming the university’s oldest graduate this year. Her remarkable journey began in 1980 when she transferred to Temple after completing an associate degree at the Community College of Philadelphia. Initially pursuing a career in Spanish education, she later paused her studies to raise her two sons as a single mother.
While balancing family responsibilities, Moore began working at Temple as a receptionist in the medical school admissions department before later joining the university budget office and eventually the provost’s office in 1989. Over the years, she steadily continued her education, taking one or two courses each semester through the university’s employee tuition program.
“It means a whole lot to me,” Moore said after finally receiving the degree she had worked toward for decades. “It’s something I’ve worked for throughout all these years, and I’ve finally accomplished.”
Despite the challenges of juggling work, parenting, and academics, Moore remained determined. She often paused her studies during stressful periods before resuming again later. She recalled spending countless late nights completing assignments and coordinating group projects with classmates.
Her final course, a writing class, was completed last fall. Among her favorite subjects were risk management and insurance, which she said taught her how to evaluate and address challenges in life.
Colleagues at Temple praised Moore for her dedication and helpfulness. Dan Berman described her as someone who consistently solved problems for others rather than simply directing them elsewhere.
Although she was the oldest graduate this year, Temple records show Moore is one of 62 people in the university’s history to earn a bachelor’s degree at age 75 or older.
Far from slowing down, Moore says she has no plans to retire. She remains active at the university and is currently involved with its Artificial Intelligence task force. She has also expressed interest in pursuing a master’s degree in human resources administration.
“Retire for what?” Moore said. “I still have a lot of life in me.”
