    • Gold medallists will earn up to 8,000 US dollars in combined rewards and bonuses.

Team Nigeria has declared itself ready for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, with the country’s athletes poised to begin their medal quest as the multi-sport event gets underway in less than 24 hours.

After months of meticulous planning and weeks of high-performance training in Aberdeen, Scotland, the Nigerian contingent has now settled into the Games Village. The arrival of the national 3×3 basketball team from Amsterdam completed Team Nigeria’s delegation ahead of the opening day of competition.

Nigeria’s campaign begins on Friday with its formidable Para Powerlifting team, a discipline that has consistently delivered medals for the country at major international competitions.

Leading the charge is team captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo, one of the most decorated para powerlifters in the world. The reigning Commonwealth champion, two-time Paralympic gold medallist, four-time world champion and multiple world record holder will be aiming to defend the title she won in Birmingham and provide Team Nigeria with a dream start in Glasgow.

She will be joined by Rita Ferdinand, the reigning world champion, who heads into the Games in exceptional form. Ferdinand recently equalled the women’s world record with a lift of 154kg at the African Open Championships in Oran, Algeria, while also setting a new African record in the women’s up to 79kg category, making her one of Nigeria’s strongest gold medal prospects.

On the athletics track, Nigeria’s hopes will rest heavily on sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi, who has emerged as one of the world’s fastest men this season.

The Auburn University star has enjoyed a remarkable campaign, winning both the NCAA Indoor 60 metres and NCAA Outdoor 100 metres titles before equalling Nigeria’s national 100 metres record of 9.84 seconds. His victories over reigning world champion Oblique Seville at both the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and the London Diamond League have further underlined his credentials heading into Glasgow.

Another of Nigeria’s biggest medal hopes is world record holder Tobi Amusan, who returns to the Commonwealth Games seeking an unprecedented third consecutive women’s 100m hurdles title.

The two-time Commonwealth champion has rediscovered her finest form in 2026, winning Diamond League meetings in Rabat and Paris, where she clocked a season’s best 12.28 seconds to defeat a world-class field. She also claimed another African title and secured qualification for the Diamond League Final, reaffirming her status as one of the sport’s leading athletes.

In the field events, African record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will spearhead Nigeria’s challenge in the men’s shot put. The two-time African champion, who holds the continental record with a throw of 22.10 metres, has established himself among the world’s elite throwers and is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading medal contenders.

Nigeria’s boxing campaign will be led by Patricia Mbata, whose rapid rise has attracted widespread attention. The British-born middleweight switched allegiance to Nigeria before winning gold at the African Games and earning her place in the national team after defeating reigning national champion Blessing Orakwe at the selection trials.

Making her Commonwealth Games debut, Mbata will be hoping to add another major international medal to her growing collection.

With a squad boasting Paralympic champions, world champions, Commonwealth champions, Diamond League winners, African champions and world record holders across several disciplines, Team Nigeria travels to Glasgow with genuine confidence of producing another impressive performance on the Commonwealth stage.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) believes improved welfare measures introduced ahead of the Games have further strengthened the team’s prospects.

Under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Commission unveiled an enhanced athlete welfare package, including increased camping allowances, improved travel support and enhanced performance bonuses.

Gold medallists stand to earn up to 8,000 US dollars in combined rewards and bonuses, while silver and bronze medallists will also receive improved incentives. In addition, every athlete and official received ₦500,000 in travel support, along with significantly enhanced local and overseas camping allowances.

With the Games now on the horizon, expectations are high that Team Nigeria will once again deliver memorable performances and reinforce its reputation as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations.
