WhatsApp: New Feature Allows Users Make Voice, Video Calls Directly From Browsers

Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced browser-based voice and video calling, allowing users to make and receive calls directly through web browsers without downloading the desktop application, in its latest effort to improve cross-device communication.

The new feature enables both one-on-one and group audio and video calls on WhatsApp Web, while retaining features already available on the mobile and desktop applications, including screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, call history and favourites. The rollout is expected to take place gradually over the coming weeks.

While announcing the update, WhatsApp said the browser-based calling capability is designed to offer users greater flexibility, particularly for those working on shared computers or devices where downloading applications is restricted.

“We’re introducing new features to make WhatsApp calls even easier, like calling from WhatsApp Web, call transfer, background noise suppression, and more,” the company said.

Explaining the browser calling feature, WhatsApp added, “You can now make and receive audio and video calls, both one-on-one and group, directly from WhatsApp Web. No app download required.”

The company further stated, “Whether you’re a college student on a shared computer, using a work laptop that doesn’t allow app downloads, or simply prefer your browser, you can jump on a call without leaving the browser you’re already on. You’ll have access to features available on your other devices including screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab with your full call history and favourites, all from your browser.”

According to WhatsApp, all browser-based calls will remain protected by end-to-end encryption and will not attract additional charges beyond the user’s internet connectivity.

“Your calls on the web are end-to-end encrypted — with no time limits and at no cost. It’s the same private experience you expect from WhatsApp,” the company said.

Beyond browser calling, WhatsApp also introduced a call transfer feature that enables users to move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting.

“For those moments when you’re on the go and start a call on your mobile device or tablet, you can seamlessly transfer it to WhatsApp Web or Desktop when you arrive home to collaborate on a larger screen or vice versa,” the company explained.

The messaging platform also unveiled a new waiting room feature aimed at giving hosts greater control over group calls. When users create a call link with the “Require approval to join” option enabled, participants will remain in a virtual waiting room until the host admits them.

Additionally, WhatsApp announced improvements to call quality through its QuickHD technology, which enables high-definition video almost immediately after a call begins, reducing the delay previously experienced before HD quality became available.

The platform has also rolled out background noise suppression to improve voice clarity during calls in noisy environments.

“We’ve launched noise suppression to remove the background noise around you so your voice comes through clearly to the person you’re calling — even in loud or busy environments. It can be managed at any time in your in-call settings,” the company said.

WhatsApp noted that the new features are being deployed gradually and will become available to users globally in the coming weeks as part of its broader strategy to make voice and video communication more seamless across mobile, desktop and web platforms.
