The semi-final is scheduled for 6.30pm Nigerian time on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

Nigeria’s Flamingos are one victory away from reaching their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s Women’s World Cup final, but standing between them and a place in history are Brazil, who will provide the toughest test yet of their impressive campaign in Morocco.

A semi-final victory on Wednesday would take Akeem Busari’s side into uncharted territory and put them within touching distance of a maiden world title. It would also complete a remarkable turnaround for a team whose campaign appeared in danger after an opening-day defeat to Poland.

From that setback, the Flamingos have grown in confidence, character and performance, recording four consecutive victories to reach the last four. Now, they face a Brazil side equally determined to make history.

Nigeria’s campaign began with a 2-1 loss to Poland, raising questions about the team’s preparation and readiness for the demands of the tournament. Busari, who was appointed in April, was still building a squad that had little time to establish its identity.

However, the Flamingos responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing one of the tournament’s biggest results: a 3-1 triumph over two-time defending champions DPR Korea.

The victory ended North Korea’s long unbeaten run in the competition and announced Nigeria as serious contenders.

They maintained that momentum with a 2-1 win over Mexico in the Round of 16. Oluebube Umejiaku scored her third goal of the tournament, while Mary Dunstan added a superb volley to secure Nigeria’s passage into the quarter-finals.

By then, the team had moved beyond the disappointment of their opening defeat and begun to show the attacking quality and resilience required to compete at the highest level.

The quarter-final against Venezuela provided another examination of Nigeria’s resolve.

For much of the contest in Salé, the Flamingos dominated proceedings but struggled to find a breakthrough. Tosin Rafiu, Dunstan and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi all tested Venezuelan goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales, who repeatedly denied Nigeria.

With extra time approaching, Oluebube Umejiaku was brought down inside the penalty area. Following a VAR review, the referee upheld the decision, allowing captain Azeezat Oduntan to step forward and convert from the spot in the 89th minute.

The late goal secured a 1-0 victory and Nigeria’s place in the semi-finals.

It was not the emphatic performance their attacking play had threatened to produce, but it demonstrated an important quality: the ability to find a way through when the pressure is greatest. That composure will be crucial against Brazil.

Umejiaku has emerged as one of Nigeria’s most influential players in Morocco. Her goals against Poland, DPR Korea and Mexico have underlined her attacking threat, while her movement, pressing and ability to create opportunities have made her central to the Flamingos’ progress.

Her contribution against Venezuela was equally decisive, winning the penalty that Oduntan converted to send Nigeria into the last four.

Adegbuyi has also provided an important attacking outlet, including her goal against DPR Korea, while Dunstan and Kanyinsola Yusuf have contributed technical quality and attacking threat.

At the other end, goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho has been a significant presence. Standing at 1.92 metres, she has offered Nigeria security between the posts, including during the Round of 16 encounter against Mexico.

The collective contribution of the squad, rather than individual brilliance alone, has been central to Nigeria’s recovery from their opening defeat.

Brazil booked their semi-final place with a 2-1 comeback victory over China, matching their best-ever performance at the tournament.

Their ability to recover from going behind is a warning for Nigeria. The South Americans have demonstrated that they can withstand pressure, adjust to difficult situations and punish opponents when opportunities arise.

The Flamingos must therefore approach the encounter with greater efficiency in front of goal and discipline without possession.

Against Venezuela, Nigeria created enough chances to settle the contest long before the 89th minute but failed to convert them. Brazil are unlikely to allow the same number of opportunities without making the Flamingos pay.

Nigeria must also be alert to Brazil’s movement, physical strength and ability to exploit spaces during transitions. While the young Nigerians will need to compete strongly in midfield and defend set-pieces effectively, they must avoid unnecessary challenges and maintain their shape.

The lesson from the quarter-final is clear: dominance means little without goals. Against a more experienced Brazilian side, the Flamingos cannot afford to leave their opportunities unfinished.

For Busari, Wednesday’s encounter represents the biggest test of his tenure since taking charge of the team. His side have shown the ability to recover from adversity, but beating Brazil will require a complete performance.

A victory would take Nigeria into their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, giving them an opportunity to compete for a title that has remained beyond the country’s reach since the competition began in 2008.

The Flamingos have already demonstrated that they can overcome difficult opponents, including the defending champions. Brazil, however, represent another level of challenge and an opportunity to establish just how far this young team has progressed.

The semi-final is scheduled for 6.30pm Nigerian time on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.

The Flamingos started their Moroccan campaign with a defeat that raised doubts about their prospects. Four victories later, they are one match away from making history.

Beyond Brazil lies a first World Cup final. For Nigeria’s young stars, this is the opportunity to turn a promising campaign into a defining moment in the history of women’s football.
