Opay unveils N1.2bn scholarship for 20 students, partners UNIUYO
Twenty outstanding students of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, will be selected to benefit from Opay’s N1.2bn 10-year scholarship programme for Nigerian Universities
Each of the recipient will receive a total of N300,000 to augment their needs in school.
This was disclosed at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Opay and management led by the head of Partnerships at Opay, Ikponmwosa Odiase and the University of Uyo management on Monday.
Speaking during the ceremony, Odiase said the company, in its efforts to add value to the society, came up with its Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative to empower the children and the youth who are the future of the country.
He said, “We also have a social impact to add value to our communities and as a result of that, we decided to come up with the Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative to empower our future.
“We believe the students, our youth, are our future of this country and the best way to do that is to empower them. That is why we came up with the scholarship scheme
“So, the first phase of this scheme is to partner with 20 higher institutions in Nigeria. Today, we offer scholarships to 20 students for ten years, giving each of them 300.000 every school year. We believe this is quite laudable”
He emphasised that the scholarship programme is not the end of the collaboration, stating that other areas in the company can partner with the University, such as an internship programme and employment generation.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Nyaudo Ndaeyo, lauded the company’s initiative and called on other organisations to emulate the good gesture and learn from them.
He said it is not how long one stays in business that matters but the impact one is able to make their the services he or she renders to the people.
“I want to salute the founders of the company because, by assessment, Opay is doing very well. It is not how long you stay in business that matters but the services you render speak for you. I want to call on other organisations to emulate and also learn from what you are doing,” the VC said
The VC who noted that the doors of the University are open 24 hours assured the company of cooperation and support in all areas of its endeavours.
Our correspondent reports that with the signing of the MOU, the university becomes the 11th beneficiary of the N1. 2bn scholarship scheme.
