Danbatta receives award from NAE
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said it remains committed to bringing out initiatives that will ensure Nigerians are given penetrating and affordable telecommunications services.
Its Executive Vice-Chairman, Prof Umar Danbatta, stated this during the 2023 Academy Technology Dinner organised by the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE) which was held in Lagos recently.
Whilst receiving a platinum award for excellence, Danbatta noted that the award is a testimony of the fact that the commission is working hard to drive its transformation agenda of ensuring universal telecommunication access to affordable and equitable service to support the nation’s economic growth.
“I am humbled by this recognition. But I am sure it means a lot more to the entire members of staff of the NCC to whom I am dedicating this award and the reason is that I could not have done the good work we have been doing over these past eight years without their support and cooperation.
“We are delighted that the public is watching, listening and observing what we are doing. This platinum award we have been given tonight is a testimony to the hard work we have put into growing the telecom sector. I want to assure you and the general public, that the NCC will do whatever it can, in tune with its mandate to bring out initiatives that will drive you know the transformation process that we are pursuing, that will make telecommunication services pervasive and affordable to all citizens of the country,” Danbatta stated.
When quizzed on what the commission is doing to help the Nigerian youths in the digital economy, he said that the commission’s important initiatives, which have been ongoing for a few years now, are targeted towards youths in the six regions of the country.
According to the EVC, the idea is to provide training to youths so that they are innovative, they can be able to live on their own, generate employment for themselves, and even be able to employ others in order to enable them to do the useful work they are doing, as this will result in self-sustenance, and for the benefit of the country at large.
It will be recalled that School Support Programmes such as the Digital Awareness Programme (DAP) and the Advanced Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADAPTI) through which computers and laptops are supplied to secondary schools and tertiary institutions, were created by NCC to support the acquisition and advancement of digital knowledge of students, their teachers and other members of their communities.
