The Federal Government has intervened in the controversy surrounding Nigerian singer Simi following the resurfacing of decade-old social media posts allegedly linked to her time working at her mother’s daycare facility, as public calls for investigation intensified across the country.
The development comes after screenshots of tweets attributed to the singer began circulating widely online in recent days, with some Nigerians alleging that the posts referenced inappropriate conduct involving children during her period of employment at the daycare. The claims triggered widespread outrage on social media, with numerous users urging authorities to examine the matter and determine whether any criminal wrongdoing occurred.
Amid the growing controversy, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) issued an official statement on Tuesday, February 24, acknowledging public concerns and affirming its readiness to act on credible information. The agency stated that it takes allegations involving the safety and welfare of children seriously and would pursue any verifiable leads.
“Following recent public discussions and concerns raised regarding alleged incidents of child sexual abuse/misconduct in daycare settings in Nigeria, we are committed to thoroughly investigating credible reports,” the statement read.
NAPTIP further appealed to members of the public who may possess firsthand knowledge, documentary evidence, or other relevant information to come forward, assuring that all submissions would be handled confidentially. The agency emphasized that actionable intelligence would be necessary for any formal investigation to proceed.
Officials also reiterated that allegations circulating on social media alone do not constitute proof of wrongdoing, stressing the importance of due process and verifiable facts before any enforcement action can be taken. They warned against spreading unverified claims that could compromise investigations or harm individuals unfairly.
The Federal Government of Nigeria is understood to be monitoring the situation closely, particularly given the sensitive nature of allegations involving minors and childcare institutions. Sources indicated that relevant agencies may collaborate should sufficient evidence emerge to warrant a full inquiry.
As of the time of filing this report, the singer had not issued a fresh public statement addressing the latest developments, while the authenticity and context of the resurfaced posts remain subjects of debate online. The situation continues to generate intense reactions, with legal experts urging caution and emphasizing that any determination of culpability must be based on thorough investigation rather than public sentiment.
