The United States Embassy in Abuja has cancelled all visa appointments for the day and advised U.S. citizens in Nigeria to stay indoors as a security precaution amid heightened global tensions linked to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. The move follows security concerns over possible protests in the Federal Capital Territory tied to the escalating hostilities between Washington and Tehran.
In its notice, the embassy stated that routine visa interviews and consular services scheduled for today would not take place and urged American citizens to avoid non-essential travel and large gatherings. “Following the launch of U.S. combat operations in Iran, Americans worldwide and especially in the Middle East should follow the guidance in the latest security alerts issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the advisory stated, warning of potential security risks and travel disruptions.
The embassy further advised U.S. nationals in Nigeria to remain vigilant, monitor local news for updates, keep identification documents readily available, and review personal security plans. Citizens were also encouraged to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive real-time alerts and facilitate contact in case of emergency.
While no specific protest locations were mentioned, the advisory indicated that the decision to suspend visa services was taken “out of an abundance of caution.” The embassy did not state when normal operations would resume, noting that further updates would be communicated as the security situation evolves.
