Nehita Ofure Irieme: In Her Shoes Wins Best Short Film at Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival 2025

Toronto played host to one of the most memorable nights in Nollywood’s international journey this year at the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF) 2025, filmmaker Nehita Ofure Irieme emerged as one of the brightest stars as her short film In Her Shoes won the award for Best Short Film in the Nollywood category.

It was an evening filled with glitz, glamour, and a celebration of storytelling on a global stage. The gala drew some of Nollywood’s most recognizable names, including Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, and veteran comedian and actor Julius Agwu. Yet the spotlight was firmly on the most fashionable Beauty Queen and Filmmaker Queen Nehita, whose creative voice is shaping a new narrative for young and emerging filmmakers.

    A filmmaker with vision

Queen Nehita’s journey into filmmaking hasn’t been a walk in the park, but it’s been a journey fueled by unwavering passion and dedication. The goal has always been clear; to stand out and be a mirror for emerging filmmakers, and young women in general to show them that with hard work and determination, any dream is within reach.

I have always believed that storytelling is more than just entertainment,” Nehita shared after receiving her award. “It is a mirror and a bridge. Through stories, we see ourselves and we also learn to or not to walk in the shoes of others. And that is what In Her Shoes is about.”

    A journey just beginning

For Nehita Ofure Irieme, this award is more than recognition. It is a validation of her work and a reminder that her vision for storytelling has global resonance.

“My dream has always been to tell stories that matter, she explained. Winning this award encourages me to keep pushing, to keep telling social impact stories that inspire empathy and change. In Her Shoes is just the beginning.

The creation of my debut short film presented its share of challenges, but the global recognition it’s now receiving, makes the effort rewarding. This achievement underscores the importance of perseverance and the power of turning obstacles into opportunities.

Ultimately, my aim is to be a beacon of strength and inspiration for the next generation of filmmakers. I aspire to be a reference figure, a symbol of hope, and a testament to the fact that with passion and dedication, everything is possible….

As Nollywood continues its journey onto the global stage, young filmmakers like Nehita Ofure Irieme are at the forefront of this cultural revolution. With her win at TINFF 2025, she has not only placed herself in the spotlight but has also reminded the world of the transformative power of African Storytelling.

The industry is evolving, audiences are expanding, and with voices like Nehita’s leading the way, the future of Nollywood has never looked brighter.
