Nigerian designer Toluwani Wabara, the creative force behind Wanni Fuga, debuted a high-profile sustainable collection at the 8th edition of Nairobi Fashion Week (NFW) this week in a landmark moment for West African fashion on the continental stage.

Representing Nigeria as a headline international designer, Wabara’s showcase aligned with the 2026 event theme, “Decarbonize,” which challenged creators to merge high-end aesthetics with environmental accountability and circular design principles.

The collection, showcased at the Sarit Expo Centre in Nairobi, received critical acclaim for its “polished craftsmanship” and signature “soft-structured” silhouettes. Industry analysts noted that the pieces successfully translated Wanni Fuga’s minimalist Lagosian roots into a broader Pan-African context, featuring clean-cut tailoring and conscious fabric choices designed for the “contemporary African woman.” By prioritizing slow-fashion values—such as durability and ethical sourcing—over seasonal excess, Wabara’s runway presentation was lauded as a “masterclass in wearable luxury with a clean conscience.”

Beyond the runway, the brand’s presence in East Africa has been solidified by a dedicated two-day pop-up event in Nairobi on January 29 and 30. This retail activation allowed Kenyan consumers and international buyers to engage directly with the new collection, which features the brand’s trademark flowing boubous, kimono sets, and the acclaimed ÈKÓ ÈLAN line. The pop-up served as a strategic move to capitalize on the momentum of the fashion week, transforming the “spectacle of the runway” into tangible commercial growth within the East African market.

Wabara’s successful debut comes at a time when Nairobi is positioning itself as Africa’s hub for sustainable fashion, hosting the UN Environment Programme headquarters and fostering a unique synergy between policy and pop culture. As one of the few Nigerian labels invited to lead the “Decarbonize” conversation, Wanni Fuga’s participation underscores the growing influence of Nigerian designers in shaping the future of global luxury through a lens of responsibility and heritage.
