Access Bank remembers late CEO Herbert Wigwe two years after

Access Bank has honored the memory of its late Group Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe, marking two years since the tragic helicopter crash that claimed his life.

In a tribute posted on Instagram Monday, the financial institution reflected on the enduring impact of Wigwe’s absence within the organization.

“Two years on, the absence of Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, CFR, remains deeply felt,” the bank stated.

Access Bank highlighted Wigwe’s pivotal role in shaping the institution’s trajectory and establishing its leadership standards.

“A visionary leader, he shaped Access with courage, clarity, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. His legacy lives on in the values we uphold, the standards we protect, and the future we continue to build,” the tribute read.

The bank also commemorated Wigwe’s wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi, who perished in the same accident.

“Today, we also remember his beloved wife, Doreen, and their son, Chizi. Their loss is profound, and they remain forever in our hearts,” Access Bank added.

The Wigwe family died on February 9, 2024, when their helicopter crashed near Nipton, California, while traveling to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The accident also claimed the lives of former Nigerian Exchange Group Plc Chairman Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two crew members.

Their remains were returned to Nigeria and laid to rest on March 9 in Wigwe’s hometown of Isiokpo, Rivers State.

Wigwe earned recognition for spearheading Access Bank’s evolution into one of Nigeria’s premier financial institutions, overseeing its expansion throughout Africa and into international markets.
