ECOWAS has repaired drug rehabilitation centre in Kano
The Economic Community of West African States has completed renovations at a drug treatment and rehabilitation centre located at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano State.
This effort is part of the regional body’s ongoing commitment to supporting member states in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with drug use disorders.
This was contained in a statement issued by the commission on Friday.
The handover ceremony took place on Thursday, with Principal Programme Officer of ECOWAS’s Drug Prevention and Control Division, Dr. Daniel Amankwaah, presenting the keys to Prof. Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, the Chief Medical Director of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
The facility now includes an extension of the Data Ward for Occupational Therapy, which will improve the hospital’s capacity to support patients undergoing rehabilitation.
ECOWAS has been in Kano since March 25, 2025, as part of its broader initiative to enhance drug rehabilitation services across the region.
The statement also highlighted that the mission also organised an advocacy meeting with local stakeholders to promote awareness and collaboration on addressing drug use disorders.
The statement stated, “ECOWAS mission has been in Kano, Nigeria, since 25 March 2025 as part of its support to Member States for the treatment and rehabilitation of people with drug use disorders.
“The mission officially handed over the building and equipment for the extension of the Data Ward for Occupational Therapy at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and organised an advocacy meeting with stakeholders.
“The keys were handed over to Prof Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, the Chief Medical Director of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, by Dr Daniel Akwasi Amankwaah, Principal Programme Officer of the ECOWAS Drug Prevention and Control Division, at an official ceremony held on Thursday 27 March 2025, in the presence of the staff of the hospital.”
