Election 2027: Security Agencies Urged to Adopt Less Lethal Measures to Protect Civilians During Unrest/Protests

Chief Executive Officer of Nicholas Auto Solution (NAS), Dennis A. Iseghohimen

As the 2027 general elections draw nearer, security agencies in Nigeria have been urged to prioritize the protection of civilian lives by adopting less-lethal crowd-control measures during protests and civil disturbances.

The appeal was made by a South African based entrepreneur and philanthropist, Dennis A. Iseghohimen, Chief Executive Officer of Nicholas Auto Solution (NAS), in a statement issued, condemning the recent shooting of a young boy by a soldier in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The protest reportedly followed growing concerns among residents over persistent kidnapping activities in the area. According to Iseghohimen, while the actions of criminal elements must be firmly condemned, the loss of an innocent life during a civilian protest is deeply troubling and unacceptable.

He emphasized that security operatives are deployed to protect lives and maintain peace, noting that the use of lethal force during protests often escalates tension and undermines public trust.

“Across many parts of the world, security agencies rely on internationally accepted crowd-control methods, including controlled warning shots and less-lethal options such as rubber bullets, to disperse violent protests while minimizing the risk of fatalities,” he stated.

Iseghohimen clarified that while no crowd control method is entirely risk free, less lethal options, when used in line with established rules of engagement, significantly reduce the likelihood of fatal outcomes compared to live ammunition.

He therefore called on the Federal Government and relevant security authorities to review operational protocols and consider wider adoption of less-lethal alternatives, alongside improved training on civilian engagement and protest management.

The philanthropist also urged community leaders, ward councillors, and residents of Esan West Local Government Area to strengthen cooperation with security agencies by remaining vigilant and supporting lawful intelligence sharing efforts to curb criminal activities in the area.

Commending the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his swift intervention following the incident, Iseghohimen expressed confidence that collaborative efforts between the state government, local authorities, and security agencies would help restore calm and address residents’ security concerns.

He concluded by stressing that public safety, accountability, and respect for human rights must remain central to security operations, particularly as the nation approaches another critical election cycle
