Uber has introduced a new hotel booking feature within its app as part of its strategy to evolve into a comprehensive “everything app.” The service, developed in partnership with Expedia, allows users to search and reserve hotel rooms from a selection of more than 700,000 properties. The feature integrates travel tools such as maps, filters, and pricing options, while enabling payments through saved card details already stored in the Uber platform. According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the company is expanding beyond ride-hailing and food delivery to become a unified platform for a wide range of everyday services. Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said the collaboration is aimed at simplifying travel planning and reducing the steps required to complete bookings. Uber also plans to extend the partnership to include short-term rental listings through Vrbo in the future. The move reflects a broader global trend toward multifunctional apps that combine services like transport, shopping, and payments in a single ecosystem, similar to platforms such as WeChat and Alipay in China. Other tech companies are also pursuing similar “super app” models, including Airbnb, which has added experiences and personal services, and X, which is exploring financial services integration. Uber further revealed plans to incorporate AI-powered tools, including meal planning, shopping list creation, delivery coordination, and a voice assistant for navigating the app.

The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos

The Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos has announced the 2026 edition of the Dragon Boat Festival and the fourth Nigerian Children Drawing Competition, highlighting growing cultural, educational, and economic ties between China and Nigeria.

Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, said the initiative reflects deepening bilateral relations as both countries mark the fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026. She noted that the relationship has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, with education and cultural exchange as a key pillar.

According to her, China and Nigeria have jointly established educational institutes to teach the Chinese language and vocational skills, emphasising that technical and vocational education has been central to China’s development and remains an area the country is keen to share with Nigeria. She added that cultural exchanges, including festivals and artistic performances, continue to strengthen mutual understanding, with events such as the Dragon Boat Festival serving as symbolic bridges between both nations.

She further noted that China remains an attractive and safe market for Nigerian business people, adding that China’s modernisation drive includes plans to increase imports of Nigerian products, thereby benefiting African economies.

The drawing competition, organised by the Chinese Consulate in Lagos in collaboration with the HuaXing Arts Troupe Nigeria, the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association in Nigeria, and the Association of Chinese Women in Nigeria, is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education. It invites children aged six to sixteen to create artwork reflecting the theme “Nigeria and China: Celebrating Cultural Friendship,” incorporating symbols such as the Great Wall, Zuma Rock, the Giant Panda, and the Nigerian Eagle.

A total of forty winners will emerge from the competition across two categories. In the Basic Category for ages six to eleven, the first prize winner will receive ₦700,000, the second prize winner ₦500,000, and the third prize winner ₦300,000. In the Secondary Category for ages twelve to sixteen, the first prize winner will receive ₦1,000,000, the second prize winner ₦700,000, and the third prize winner ₦500,000. In addition, thirty-four other finalists will receive consolation prizes of ₦100,000 each.

Chairman of the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Association in Nigeria, Dr Eric Ni, described the initiative as a fusion of heritage and creativity. He said the Dragon Boat Festival represents resilience and unity, while the children’s drawing competition showcases the imagination and aspirations of young Nigerians. He added that the programme is designed to empower children and encourage them to explore their talents while strengthening cross-cultural ties.

Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Abel Enitan, represented by Deputy Director, School Support Services Department, Education Support Services, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Fapohunda Solomon, commended the Chinese government and its partners for their continued investment in Nigeria’s educational and cultural development. He said the collaboration comes at a crucial time when Nigeria seeks to promote self-reliance in the arts and strengthen technical and vocational education.

He referenced a recent agreement between the Federal Ministry of Education and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to enhance technical, vocational, and engineering education, noting that such partnerships are vital for building national capacity. He, however, urged that more attention be given to the training and development of teachers to ensure long-term impact.

The competition, which has grown from a Lagos-based event into a nationwide programme, attracted thousands of participants in previous editions. Organisers said the 2026 edition will feature improved prize categories and a two-stage verification process to ensure authenticity of entries, including a live drawing session for finalists.

The winners of the 2026 competition are expected to be announced during the Children’s Day celebration on May 27, as both countries continue to celebrate a milestone year in their diplomatic relations.
