The agency currently records daily patronage of “over 42,266 passengers daily with an average of 1,000 bus trips every day.”

The Lagos State Government has said the Lagos Bus Services Limited currently records over 42,000 passenger movements daily through about 1,000 bus trips across the state, as part of efforts to expand affordable public transportation.

The figure was disclosed in a statement signed on Tuesday by the Director of Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, and presented during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the performance reflects ongoing efforts to modernise Lagos transport and improve mobility across road, rail and water systems.

According to the report presented at the briefing, “Lagos Bus Services Limited moved a total of 60,882,000 passengers from May 2019 till February 2025.”

It added that the agency currently records daily patronage of “over 42,266 passengers daily with an average of 1,000 bus trips every day.”

The report also stated that fares have remained comparatively lower than those charged by informal transport operators, describing LBSL as a key tool for affordable mobility in the state.

Osiyemi said the bus network now covers all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas, including Ibeju-Lekki, Ojo and Ikorodu.

He said, “LBSL currently maintains the widest public bus network coverage in Lagos State, operating across all five IBILE divisions and 13 Local Government Areas.”

The report further noted that the agency operates “21 corridors and over 40 bus service routes across the State,” supported by six depots and a fleet of 300 buses.

“The achievements reflect the commitment of the Sanwo-Olu administration towards building an integrated, safe, affordable and efficient transportation system for Lagosians in line with the THEMES+ Agenda,” Osiyemi said.

He added that the government remains committed to expanding infrastructure across road, rail and water transport systems to improve connectivity.

In an earlier presentation at the same briefing, the Ministry of Transportation outlined broader achievements under the administration across rail, traffic management, and digital mobility systems.

It stated that “over 3.5 million passengers have used the Blue Rail Line,” while operations on the Red Line Rail have been expanded with additional coaches to reduce waiting time for commuters.

The Ministry also said ongoing works include the “Blue Line Phase II project from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko,” alongside junction upgrades at Toyin Street, Opebi Road, Allen Avenue and other major corridors.

It added that intelligent traffic systems have been deployed in Ikeja, Lekki, Ikoyi, Surulere, Epe, Gbagada and Victoria Island to improve traffic flow.

On waterways, the report said “about two million passengers now use Lagos waterways monthly,” supported by ferry expansion, safety campaigns, life jacket distribution and the OMI-EKO electric ferry initiative.

Osiyemi said, “The Ministry remains committed to delivering a safe, integrated, affordable, and sustainable transportation system in line with the THEMES+ Agenda.”

He added that “several new projects are already planned for 2026,” including the Green and Purple Rail Line projects, the Lekki Water Taxi initiative, AI driver simulators, and expanded smart mobility systems.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the reforms reflect a broader transformation of Lagos transport beyond rail and road infrastructure.

He said, “People who believe transportation is only about the Blue and Red Line Rail projects or NURTW activities would now better understand that transportation is much broader.”

Omotoso added that the administration’s transport initiatives are aimed at building a more connected and technology-driven mobility system across the state.
